In March 2015, at the international Geneva Motor Show, the German company Mercedes-Benz once again surprised the public with its new two-axle super-SUV G-Class 4 × 4², which, according to the creators, replaced the six-wheeled model G 63 AMG 6 × 6. In Switzerland, the car was presented only in a conceptual guise, but its commercial model was not long in coming - in June the five-door entered the series, and in the fall it reached the Russian market.

Externally, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4 × 4² really impresses with its uncompromising, and it is simply impossible to confuse it with a conventional model - the distinctive features of the SUV are noticeably widened fenders, a bumper from the G63 AMG, fantastic ground clearance, an LED "chandelier" on the roof, double AMG-style exhaust tailpipes and 22-inch rollers. For a surcharge, the "German" can be equipped with wheels with "toothy" tires measuring 37 × 12.5 × 18.

In length "Gelendvagen squared" extends to 4500 mm, of which 2850 mm falls under the distance between the axles, and in width and height is 2100 mm and 2235 mm, respectively. The ground clearance of the SUV is an impressive 438 mm, and its "combat" weight exceeds 3 tons.

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4 × 4² almost in every way echoes the standard "Helika" - the proprietary "Mercedes" design, expensive finishing materials and the highest level of performance.

Inside the car, five full-fledged seats are organized, and the volume of its cargo compartment varies from 480 to 2250 liters, depending on the condition of the rear sofa.

Specifications. Depending on the sales market, the SUV is offered in several petrol modifications, which “flaunt” a 7-speed “automatic” 7G-tronic, permanent four-wheel drive (thrust is divided between the axles in equal shares), three differentials with a lock, a transfer case and a reduction transmission:

  • The "heart" of the version G500 4 × 4² (in this form, the "German" is supplied to Russia) is an aluminum V8 engine with a volume of 4.0 liters with direct injection and two turbochargers inside the camber of the cylinder block, generating 422 "stallions" at 5250-5500 rpm and 610 Nm of peak torque at 2250-4750 rpm.
  • In some other countries (in particular, in the USA) the car is available in the version G550 4 × 4², which is equipped with the same engine, but armed with 416 horsepower and 610 Nm of torque.

The element of the German all-terrain vehicle is off-road: it is able to cope with fords up to one meter deep, and its exit and entry angles are 54 and 52 degrees, respectively (well, the impressive clearance under the "belly" and a serious four-wheel drive allow the car to move on almost any terrain) ... At the same time, the five-door will not save in running disciplines: it copes with the first "hundred" after 7.4 seconds, gains maximum 210 km / h and "destroys" no more than 13.8 liters of fuel in mixed mode.

Like the base model, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4 × 4² is based on a powerful ladder frame with spring-type dependent suspension on both axles. But the key features of the SUV are army portal axles and two spring-shock absorber units on each wheel (one of the shock absorbers with fixed settings, and the second - adaptive, electronically controlled and endowed with “comfortable” and “sport” modes of operation).
As usual, the car is equipped with a power steering and disc brakes "in a circle" (ventilated at the front) with a bunch of modern "assistants".

Options and prices. In Russia, you can buy an "extreme" Mercedes Benz-G 500 4 × 4² at a price of 19,190,000 rubles. By default, the SUV has six airbags, leather interior design, bi-xenon headlights, dual-zone "climate", ESP, ABS, 22-inch wheel disks, front seats with electric drive and heating, a multimedia complex, advanced "music" with nine speakers, power windows for all doors, rain and light sensors and a bunch of other relevant equipment.
